What does White Rose smell like?
Think of a rose picked at dawn, still wet with dew. White rose smells of cool green petals with a lemony edge and none of the honey or jam of red roses. It has a clean, slightly soapy side. On skin it stays quiet and soon melts into musk. It is the rose for people who say they don't like rose.
Origin and production
Nobody sells a white rose oil as such. Rose oils and absolutes come mainly from Rosa damascena and Rosa centifolia, both pink varieties. White rose is therefore an accord. Perfumers start from rose molecules such as phenylethyl alcohol and citronellol, then lighten them with green, watery or citrus notes. The name describes a colour and a mood, not a botanical variety.
How perfumers use it
White rose adds a floral touch without weight. It pairs with water lily, jasmine, citrus and musks. L'Eau par Kenzo (1996) floats it in an aquatic accord with white peach and mint. Lanvin Rumeur (2006) sets it among magnolia and aldehydes in a muskier style. At Serge Lutens, Fleurs d'Oranger (1995) hides it behind orange blossom and tuberose, where it tames the cumin.
How to wear it
Good for spring and summer, at work or at the weekend. These are light scents, so plan a top-up at lunch: L'Eau par Kenzo rarely lasts more than four hours.
