Our take
What does Balmain Homme smell like?
Balmain launched Balmain Homme in June 2015, in a bottle inspired by the house's military jacket. Olivier Pescheux composed it, and it was pitched as a woody oriental. The opening is spicy without burning. Nutmeg and saffron give a dry warmth while bergamot keeps some light in it. The heart reveals a supple leather, closer to suede than a biker jacket. Violet leaf adds a green, nearly metallic edge that stops it from getting heavy. Cedar, tonka and moss make up the base. Tonka softens, cedar holds the shape. It borrows the saffron and leather pairing of Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather, in a polished version without the raw smoke. Think new coat rather than saddle. The leather stays close to the skin and grows softer with time. It has since vanished from several retailers, which is a shame given its price.
When to wear it
An autumn and winter masculine that won't bother anyone at the office. Three sprays on the chest and neck.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Woody family. Balmain Homme is one of 7 creations by Balmain in our encyclopedia.
