What does Ombre Leather smell like?
Ombre Leather, launched by Tom Ford in 2018 and composed by Sonia Constant, reworks leather in a more approachable way than the classic smoky leathers. Fresh cardamom, green violet leaf and slightly metallic saffron open the scent. The heart reveals a supple, almost suede-like leather, softened by jasmine and shaded by patchouli. A base of moss, amber and musk leaves a warm, powdery impression, like a leather jacket worn for years. It feels both rugged and polished, suggesting open spaces and travel without any aggressive edges. It sits close enough to feel personal while leaving a clear leather trail.

Ideal in cool weather, for evenings or everyday wear; it suits anyone after a modern, easy-to-wear leather.
The story of Ombre Leather
Tom Ford splits its fragrances into two main lines. Private Blend is the pricier, more exclusive one and Signature is sold more widely. Ombre Leather belongs to the second, in a black glass bottle. To see where it fits, go back to Tuscan Leather. Launched in the Private Blend line in 2007, it has been the brand’s leather reference ever since with its raspberry and raw, almost animal hide. Ombre Leather, composed by Sonia Constant and released in 2018, offers a softer and easier leather meant for a broader audience. Where Tuscan Leather suggests a Florentine saddlery, Ombre Leather brings to mind a jacket worn on a desert road. The late 2010s were also when suede and clean leathers gained ground on the smoky, tarry leathers handed down from the 1920s. A denser Parfum version followed a few years later. For many people it has become the first Tom Ford they try, and often the one they keep.
Our detailed review
Right away the cardamom surprises: cool, almost minty. Violet leaf brings a damp green note that saffron turns a little metallic. The leather shows up after about half an hour. It is neither smoky nor tarry. Think of the inside of a new suede bag, supple and clean. Jasmine and patchouli round it out. For three or four hours Ombre Leather holds that comfortable line. Then moss, amber and musk take over and it becomes warm, faintly powdery skin. It is very well made. Our reservation is exactly that ease. Anyone who knows the great leathers will find it short on edge and mystery. The musky drydown is fairly generic too. It suits men and women discovering leather scents, and anyone who wants an evening fragrance without heaviness. Fans of dark birch or smoky leathers will find it too smooth. As a first leather, it is our safest recommendation.
Ombre Leather vs its rivals
Its older sibling Tuscan Leather shares the leather and saffron, the jasmine and amber. It opens on a sharper raspberry and thyme, though, over a rawer base of suede and incense. It is more animalic and darker. Parfums de Marly’s Godolphin shares saffron, jasmine and leather over amber and musk. It adds thyme and cypress, rose and iris. The result is a more classic, powdery leather with the elegance of a tailored suit. Another Parfums de Marly, Kuhuyan picks up violet leaf, jasmine and leather. It then lays down oud and heliotrope for something sweeter and more powdery. Our advice: Ombre Leather for a modern, easy leather you can wear almost anywhere. Tuscan Leather if you want raw intensity, and Godolphin for something more dressed up. Kuhuyan is for lovers of warm, powdery leathers.
Longevity, projection and use
Intensity 4 out of 5 in eau de parfum. Ombre Leather lasts eight to ten hours on skin, often longer on a jacket or sweater. Projection is moderate to strong for the first two hours, then it tightens around the body. Two sprays are enough, one on the neck and one on the chest. Three get heavy indoors. It suits autumn and winter, evenings and everyday wear, and it works at the office in a light dose. Mild spring days are fine with a single spray. In summer the leather and amber turn stifling fast.
