Our take
What does L'Ange Noir smell like?
Givenchy launched L'Ange Noir in autumn 2016 as a follow-up to Ange ou Démon from 2006. The bottle keeps the line's cut silhouette with a wider base. The perfumer has not been confirmed. The opening is lively but not fresh: bergamot fades fast behind pink pepper and a slightly bitter almond. The heart carries the big idea. A very powdery white iris meets toasted, faintly salty black sesame, and that roasted-seed note is what makes it stand out. The base stays soft. Tonka and amber warm everything and ambrette adds a plant musk that hugs the skin. Compared with the fruitier, more floral Ange ou Démon, L'Ange Noir is drier and more gourmand. It's hard to find now, which has earned it a small cult following. Expect to pay a premium on resale sites.
When to wear it
A powdery floral for autumn evenings, worn close to the skin. Two sprays are plenty since it doesn't project much.
It belongs to the Floral, Oriental / Amber family. L'Ange Noir is one of 40 creations by Givenchy in our encyclopedia.
