Our take
What does Le Parfum smell like?
Lalique introduced Le Parfum in 2005 and gave the formula to Dominique Ropion. It was the crystal house's first oriental, built on the classic vanilla, patchouli and coumarin trio. The opening surprises with West Indian bay, spicy and almost medicinal. Bergamot and pink pepper make it sparkle for the first few minutes. Then the heart turns soft and gourmand. Heliotrope and almond smell like marzipan, with jasmine staying politely in the background. The base follows the classic oriental template. Vanilla, tonka and patchouli make it round, and sandalwood adds creaminess. Compared with Guerlain's Shalimar, Le Parfum is less smoky and less leathery. The almond also makes it more gourmand. The overall effect is warm and a little old-school. The bay leaf is what keeps it from going soppy. Without it, this would be just another vanilla.
When to wear it
A winter evening scent that sits well on wool. Two sprays are enough, as it projects a lot.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber family. Le Parfum is one of 17 creations by Lalique in our encyclopedia.
