Our take
What does Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca smell like?
Herba Fresca was one of Guerlain's early Aqua Allegoria releases. It came out in 1999, credited to Jean-Paul Guerlain and Mathilde Laurent. It's a very simple eau, almost a sketch. Lemon and clover open on the feel of a damp lawn. Then the mint arrives, more leaf than candy. Think of the sprigs you crush into a glass of tea. Green tea keeps it company and adds a slight bitterness. The base is floral, which is unusual. Lily of the valley and cyclamen give an airy transparency instead of a real woody floor. As a result the scent stays fresh to the end but fades rather quickly. Compared with Sisley's Eau de Campagne, another green classic, Herba Fresca is lighter and much mintier. It's also one of the few eaux in the collection that has survived for more than twenty-five years.
