Our take
What does Habit Rouge L'Instinct smell like?
In May 2022 Guerlain asked Delphine Jelk to rethink Habit Rouge, its 1965 masculine oriental. She framed it as a freer version, and the bottle reads Eau de Toilette Intense. Bergamot opens with a prickle of Sichuan pepper. That pepper doesn't burn. It tingles, and the start feels almost electric. The heart is where things get interesting. Hemp brings a grassy note that edges toward cut hay, while maté adds the bitterness of a strong herbal tea. A rose sits quietly between them. The base comes back to the family line. Patchouli and vetiver lay down dry wood, then tonka and vanilla bring back the powdery sweetness of the original. Next to Habit Rouge itself, L'Instinct has less citrus and less leather. It feels greener overall, but it keeps the sugary base that marks the house.
When to wear it
A spring or autumn scent for daytime and weekends. Three sprays are plenty, since the tonka swells after the first hour.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Woody family. Habit Rouge L'Instinct is one of 89 creations by Guerlain in our encyclopedia.
