Our take
What does Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver smell like?
In 2018 Christine Nagel created Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver, an eau de parfum that reworks Jean-Claude Ellena's 2006 masculine. She shifts its centre of gravity towards vetiver. The opening is bitter grapefruit juice with bergamot and lemon. It is sharper and juicier than the orange of the original. Sichuan pepper arrives in the heart. It gives an almost electric tingle, and geranium adds a crushed-leaf note. Then vetiver takes over. Earthy and a little smoky, it is backed by olibanum, patchouli and a more modern amberwood. The incense lends a mineral coolness. Compared with the 2006 Terre d'Hermès and its flinty note, Eau Intense Vétiver is greener and sharper. It projects more too, especially in the first two hours. Some wearers find it fades faster than the original on dry skin.
