Our take
What does L'Homme Idéal Cool smell like?
Guerlain launched L'Homme Idéal Cool for summer 2019. Thierry Wasser composed it with help from in-house perfumer Delphine Jelk. It's a fresh variation on the 2014 L'Homme Idéal, known for its amaretto-style almond. The opening goes all in on cold. Mint takes over at once, surrounded by bergamot and sweet orange. A quiet anise adds a little pastis twist that is a pleasant surprise. The heart keeps the line's DNA. The almond is still there, lightened by watery notes and a hint of orange blossom. Vetiver and patchouli return in the base, and ambroxan gives a clean, slightly mineral skin effect. Compared with the original, Cool is less sweet and far less boozy. It keeps enough almond for you to recognise the family. Longevity is fair for a summer eau de toilette.
