Our take
What does Galop d'Hermès smell like?
Galop d'Hermès came out in 2016. It was one of Christine Nagel's first perfumes for the house, which she joined in 2014. The bottle takes the shape of a stirrup, a nod to Hermès's saddle-making past. The house sums up the formula in three materials: rose, leather and saffron. Saffron leads with a slightly metallic glow, and retailers add quince to the opening. The rose shows up fast. It is fruity and almost candied, while osmanthus lends it an apricot sheen. Don't expect saddle leather. This smells more like the lining of a new handbag, soft as suede, and a musk keeps it close to the skin. At parfum strength it projects very little but lasts well. Chanel's Cuir de Russie is smokier and drier. At Hermès the flower comes first and the skin second.
When to wear it
Save it for autumn evenings and dates where people stand close. Two dabs at the base of the neck are plenty, since it stays quiet but holds on.
It belongs to the Leather family. Galop d'Hermès is one of 47 creations by Hermès in our encyclopedia.
