What does Un Jardin sur le Nil smell like?
The second chapter in Hermès' garden series, launched in 2005, Un Jardin sur le Nil grew out of Jean-Claude Ellena's trip to Aswan. It shows his art of transparency: few materials, lots of light. The opening is led by a green mango, tart and faintly resinous, made sparkling by grapefruit and watery by lotus. The heart blends peony, orange blossom and bulrush into a damp, vegetal chord that suggests riverbanks and freshly cut stems. The base stays airy, a whisper of incense, woody sycamore and musk, like the cool shade of a tree over water. It never chases power; it sketches a landscape.
