Our take
What does Le Male Aviator smell like?
Jean Paul Gaultier released Le Male Aviator in 2020 as a limited edition. The sailor of the 1995 Le Male swaps his striped top for a flight jacket. The eau de toilette keeps the original’s mint and drops almost everything else. The opening pairs mint and bergamot, very fresh and nearly mentholated. In the heart, violet leaf brings a metallic green. Geranium adds a pink, peppery touch. This part gives the scent its airy feel, like cold wind at altitude. The base sets tonka bean on sandalwood and woody notes. The sweetness recalls Le Male without the vanilla sugar or the powdery lavender. Next to the original, Aviator is greener, drier and more modern. It also has less personality, and it lacks the cheeky sweetness that made the 1995 bottle famous. Now discontinued, it resells above its launch price.
