Our take
What does Le Beau Mâle smell like?
Jean Paul Gaultier launched Le Beau Mâle in March 2013. Francis Kurkdjian, who composed Le Mâle back in 1995, returned to write a fresher variation. Sølve Sundsbø shot the campaign, with model Kaylan Falgoust posing on ice and a striped sailor top over one shoulder. The opening is all herbs. Mint and wormwood give a green, slightly bitter freshness, far from the sugary vanilla of the original. Lavender comes next and feels brighter than in Le Mâle. Orange blossom and sage surround it with a floral softness that shows the family resemblance. The base is little more than clean musk. That is where it loses some strength. Without Le Mâle’s vanilla and tonka, the drydown stays thin and fades fairly fast. Against the original, Le Beau Mâle is more aromatic and better behaved. It is clearly aimed at summer.
When to wear it
A summer aromatic for daytime, from the office to holidays. Spray it generously on the chest since longevity is only average.
It belongs to the Fougère, Aromatic family. Le Beau Mâle is one of 14 creations by Jean Paul Gaultier in our encyclopedia.
