Our take
What does Le Male in the Navy smell like?
Jean Paul Gaultier and Puig launched Le Male in the Navy in late 2018 as a limited edition. Quentin Bisch and Natalie Gracia-Cetto composed it. The glass torso turns navy blue with white sailor stripes, and the box shows two sailors arm-wrestling. It opens on peppermint, very cold, with a watery breeze. The heart adds a salty sea accord that smells like skin after a swim rather than seaweed. The base returns to the line's DNA. Vanilla comes in, toned down by ambergris. That gives it a mineral and slightly salty edge. Compared with the 1995 Le Male, In the Navy drops the lavender and powdery orange blossom for a more marine freshness. The mint and vanilla contrast is still there. The house calls it an aquatic oriental fougère. Travel retail shops carried it widely.
When to wear it
A scent for summer evenings, on holiday or at a bar terrace. Two or three sprays will do, since the vanilla always comes through.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Fougère family. Le Male in the Navy is one of 14 creations by Jean Paul Gaultier in our encyclopedia.
