Francis Kurkdjian perfumes, from Le Mâle to Baccarat Rouge 540

Francis Kurkdjian made two of the most recognisable scents of the last thirty years: Le Mâle for Jean Paul Gaultier in 1995 and Baccarat Rouge 540 under his own name. We rank Baccarat Rouge 540 first for sheer influence, with Le Mâle second and Grand Soir third. Grand Soir is the cleanest amber his house makes. Across all eight, the same idea returns. A few bright materials, easy to read, built to last on skin.

Career: from Le Mâle to Dior

Born in Paris in 1969, Kurkdjian trained at ISIPCA before moving into fine fragrance composition. Le Mâle came out in 1995, when he was about twenty-five, and its torso bottle became a fixture of men's counters. Commissions for big names followed. Narciso Rodriguez for Her, co-written with Christine Nagel, arrived in 2003. Burberry Her came much later, in 2018. In 2009 he founded Maison Francis Kurkdjian with Marc Chaya, which gave him a freedom few perfumers get. Baccarat Rouge 540 grew out of that setup and became a global phenomenon in the mid-2010s. In 2021 Dior named him perfume creation director, taking over from François Demachy. That double role explains the range on this page. You get mass-market crowd-pleasers on one side and niche ambers on the other, all from the same hand.

Style: clarity over complexity

Look at the eight perfumes here and a pattern appears. Kurkdjian likes short formulas where two or three materials carry the whole scent. Grand Soir is almost entirely labdanum, benzoin and vanilla. Petit Matin comes down to lemon, orange blossom and a clean musk. Even Baccarat Rouge 540 rests on one simple contrast: saffron and jasmine up top, a very diffusive ambery wood underneath. The downside is linearity. His perfumes change little between the first hour and the sixth. Orange blossom is another constant. It shows up in Le Mâle, Narciso Rodriguez for Her and Petit Matin, always handled in an almost soapy way. He is also comfortable with sweetness. The vanilla in Le Mâle and the cocoa in Burberry Her show a perfumer who embraces softness where many niche houses avoid it.

Where to start

If you have never worn his work, start with Grand Soir rather than Baccarat Rouge 540. It is less divisive and warmer, and it shows off his skill with amber better. Try Baccarat Rouge 540 next, on skin rather than a paper strip, because its burnt-sugar accord shifts a lot from person to person. For summer, Petit Matin is the only real option here. It rates 2 out of 5 for intensity, so expect modest staying power. A man looking for an easy classic at any department store should go straight to Le Mâle. Save Oud Satin Mood and the Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait for later. They are the heaviest scents on the page, both rated 5 out of 5, and one spray is plenty. Sprayed on a wool jumper, they are still there the next morning.

Our selection

8 perfumes, in order

  1. 1 Baccarat Rouge 540 Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian · 2015 · Amber Floral

    Baccarat Rouge 540

Ranked first because few recent perfumes have been imitated as widely. Kurkdjian sets saffron and jasmine over an ambery wood that hovers well off the skin, with a burnt-sugar glow. It suits people who want to be recognised from across a room. The real flaw: it is now so common that the mystery has gone. Airier than the Extrait, it remains the best way into his house.

  2. 2 Le Mâle Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier · 1995 · Oriental Fougère

    Le Mâle

His breakthrough, from 1995. Barbershop lavender meets vanilla and tonka, with cinnamon and cumin adding a skin-like warmth. It works for men who are happy wearing something sweet and recognisable. Fans of dry woody scents will find it too soft. More accessible than Grand Soir, it shares that same love of vanilla bases.

  3. 3 Grand Soir Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian · 2016 · Oriental Amber

    Grand Soir

Amber with nothing in the way: labdanum up top, benzoin and amber in the heart, vanilla and tonka below. Kurkdjian strips out every distraction and gets a golden, resinous scent with strong longevity. The flaw comes from the same place, since it barely moves through the day. Less sugary than Le Mâle and far quieter than Baccarat Rouge 540, it is our pick for a first bottle from his house.

  4. 4 Narciso Rodriguez for Her Narciso Rodriguez

    Narciso Rodriguez · 2003 · Floral Musky

    Narciso Rodriguez for Her

Co-created with Christine Nagel in 2003, this one made musk the main subject rather than a background. Rose and orange blossom cling close to the skin over patchouli and vetiver, which darken the whole thing. It suits women who want a sensual, quiet signature, office included. Some find it too dark. Drier than Burberry Her, it has also aged far better.

  5. 5 Oud Satin Mood Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian · 2015 · Oriental Floral

    Oud Satin Mood

Here the oud has nothing animalic about it. Kurkdjian wraps it in violet, rose and benzoin, then lays it on vanilla and sandalwood for a thick fabric-like texture. This is the richest scent in the selection and it belongs to winter evenings. Overspray it and the sweetness becomes suffocating. It shares benzoin with Grand Soir, in a far more opulent register.

  6. 6 Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian · 2017 · Oriental Floral

    Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait

Same idea as the original, only denser. Bitter almond and saffron open, jasmine and cedar hold the heart, then fir resin and musk take over. It is for Baccarat Rouge 540 fans who find the original too airy. The limit is obvious: the identity stays very close, so owning both makes little sense. One or two sprays in cold weather is enough.

  7. 7 Petit Matin Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian · 2016 · Citrus Aromatic

    Petit Matin

The only summer scent on the page. Lemon and bergamot, then orange blossom and lavandin, then musk and ambroxan. Kurkdjian goes after the smell of clean sheets in morning sun and gets it. It works at the office or on holiday, for anyone. Longevity is modest, with an intensity of 2 out of 5. Next to his ambers, it proves his clarity works in fresh scents too.

  8. 8 Her Burberry

    Burberry · 2018 · Fruity Gourmand

    Her

A 2018 mainstream commission that shows his sweetest side. Blackberry, raspberry and strawberry open onto rose and jasmine, then a base of musk and dry cocoa. It suits lovers of jammy red fruit, day or date night. The sweetness does flatten out after a few hours. Younger and fruitier than Narciso Rodriguez for Her, it is also less distinctive.

Frequently asked questions

What is Francis Kurkdjian's most famous perfume?

There are two contenders. Le Mâle for Jean Paul Gaultier, released in 1995, made his name with the wider public. Baccarat Rouge 540, from his own house, became one of the most recognisable scents in the world from the mid-2010s and has been copied endlessly since.

What has Francis Kurkdjian made for other brands?

In our catalogue you will find Le Mâle for Jean Paul Gaultier, Narciso Rodriguez for Her (co-created with Christine Nagel) and Burberry Her from 2018. His full body of work is much larger. Since 2021 he has also led perfume creation at Dior alongside running his own house.

Which Maison Francis Kurkdjian perfume should I try first?

Grand Soir if you like warm ambers, Petit Matin if you want a summer citrus. Baccarat Rouge 540 is the famous one but it divides people. Wear it on skin for a full day before buying, since its burnt-sugar note changes a lot from one person to the next.

Baccarat Rouge 540 vs the Extrait: what's the difference?

The Extrait adds bitter almond at the top and pushes fir resin and musk into the base. The result is denser and warmer, less airy than the Eau de Parfum. Both rate 5 out of 5 for intensity, so keep the Extrait for cold weather and stick to one or two sprays.
