What does Black Pepper smell like?
The opening is surprisingly fresh, almost lemony. You won't get the burn of ground pepper. Piperine, the compound that bites on the tongue, does not evaporate. What remains are terpenes that smell of zest, dry wood and warm stone. Caryophyllene adds a slightly dusty woody base. A CO2 extract comes closer to freshly cracked pepper. On skin it fades fairly fast and leaves a clean dryness behind.
Origin and production
The pepper vine (Piper nigrum) comes from the Malabar Coast in what is now Kerala, in southern India. Pepper made the fortunes of Arab, Venetian and then Portuguese traders. The berries are picked green and sun-dried until they turn black and wrinkled. The essential oil is steam-distilled from crushed peppercorns. India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Madagascar are among the growing regions.
How perfumers use it
Black pepper works in the top or the heart, where it adds energy without taking over. With grapefruit it creates the dry, fizzy opening of Zadig & Voltaire This is Him (2016) or Diesel Only The Brave Wild (2014). Valentino pairs it with cinnamon and incense in Uomo Noir Absolu (2017). Lalique Hommage à l'Homme (2011) sets it beside violet and pimento. Much earlier, Guerlain Chamade pour Homme (1999) already opened with bergamot and black pepper.
How to wear it
Black pepper works year-round. Fresh takes like Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Cologne Bleue suit summer. The heavier incense and oud versions belong to winter, two sprays at most.
