What does Toffee smell like?
Toffee smells of sugar cooked right to the edge of burnt, with plenty of butter. It is darker than blond caramel and richer than candyfloss. A bitter edge keeps it from feeling childish. In perfume it thickens a heart and makes woods more comfortable. On skin it lasts for hours and blends with vanilla and amber. It gets tiring fast if the rest of the formula is just as sweet.
Origin and production
Toffee is a British confection made from sugar and butter cooked for a long time. No essence is extracted from it. The accord relies on synthetic molecules such as maltol and ethyl maltol, which smell of caramelised sugar. Furaneol adds a fruity, cooked facet. Milky or buttery notes complete the effect.
How perfumers use it
Toffee sits in the heart with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger or sage. It then slides towards vanilla and ambery woods. Stronger With You Intensely (2019) pairs it with cinnamon and sage, freshened by juniper berry in the top. Azzaro The Most Wanted Intense (2021) sets it between cardamom and amberwood. The Most Wanted (2022) makes it spicier with ginger. Jimmy Choo (2011) uses it on the feminine side, with orchid.
How to wear it
Toffee is a winter evening note. One or two sprays are enough, as these perfumes project strongly. At the office it can quickly feel like too much.
