Our take

What does Jimmy Choo smell like?

The first fragrance from the luxury shoemaker, launched in 2011, Jimmy Choo translates the brand's glamour into a modern fruity chypre. The opening pairs green notes, juicy pear and mandarin for a fruity, sparkling freshness. The heart brings in orchid and tiger orchid alongside a toffee that adds an unexpected gourmand sweetness. The base of patchouli and woody notes gives the scent its chypre backbone: an earthy, slightly dark depth that contrasts with the caramel. The result is sweet yet structured, feminine and sophisticated, designed for nights in the city more than discretion.

When to wear it

Evenings or dates, but also the office, from autumn to spring; it suits lovers of modern, glamorous fruity chypres.

The story of Jimmy Choo

In 2011, Jimmy Choo was a shoe brand first. It was founded in London in 1996 by cobbler Jimmy Choo and Tamara Mellon, and Sex and the City made its heels famous well beyond fashion circles. The move into fragrance came through a licence with Inter Parfums, a specialist in designer scents. The idea behind this first feminine was straightforward: turn the attitude of a stiletto into a fruity chypre. That choice fitted the moment. Since Coco Mademoiselle in 2001 and Miss Dior Chérie in 2005, patchouli softened with fruit and sugar had become the formula for mainstream chic, and the caramel in Miss Dior Chérie had opened the door to gourmand touches. Jimmy Choo took that template and added a tiger orchid, mostly for the evocative name. The name nods to the shoe; the scent itself plays it safe. Success quickly spawned a whole family: Flash in 2013, Blossom and Illicit in 2015, Fever in 2018. On the men’s side, Jimmy Choo Man arrived in 2014. The original bottle is still the brand’s reference at the fragrance counter.

Our detailed review

Expect a sharper start than the name suggests. The pear is crisp and green, almost unripe, and mandarin gives it a soda fizz. That lasts about twenty minutes. Then the toffee moves in, faint at first, like a milk caramel slowly dissolving. The orchid does not smell of anything very specific. It works as a creamy floral binder. After two hours patchouli takes over with an earthy, faintly cocoa facet that gives the scent its staying power. That is the best stage, sweet without being sticky. The flaw is well known. This patchouli-caramel idea has been copied by dozens of launches since 2011, and Jimmy Choo now smells a bit familiar, like something you have passed a thousand times in a lift. It will suit anyone who wants a dressed-up sweet scent that behaves at work and flatters at night. If you want personality, or a real oakmoss chypre, look elsewhere.

Jimmy Choo vs its rivals

Britney Spears’ Fantasy shares the orchid and the woody base, but it is basically a cake: cupcake, white chocolate, lychee. Jimmy Choo reads more grown-up thanks to patchouli, which Fantasy lacks entirely. Tiziana Terenzi’s Kirke also pairs pear with patchouli. It is far fruitier, with passionfruit, raspberry and blackcurrant, and much louder. One spray of Kirke equals three of Jimmy Choo. Mugler’s Womanity only meets it on green notes and woods. Its salty fig and caviar accord make it more divisive and more original. Our advice: Jimmy Choo for a polished sweet scent that fits anywhere, Kirke for fruit that gets noticed, Womanity if sweet-and-salty intrigues you more than it worries you.

Longevity, projection and use

On average skin this eau de parfum lasts 5 to 7 hours, a bit longer on oily skin. Projection is noticeable for the first hour, then it pulls in close. After three hours people need to lean in. Two or three sprays on the neck and inner wrists get the dose right. On a scarf the patchouli-caramel lingers for a full day. It works from early autumn to late spring. For the office, two sprays are plenty. In real heat the toffee turns heavy, so we leave it on the shelf.

VerdictA well-built, enjoyable fruity chypre whose toffee-patchouli idea has since been widely explored.

It belongs to the Chypre, Fruity family. Jimmy Choo is one of 1 creations by Jimmy Choo in our encyclopedia.
