What does L'Ombre dans l'Eau smell like?
Launched by Diptyque in 1983, L’Ombre dans l’Eau evokes a riverside garden where roses grow beside blackcurrant bushes. The scent hinges on a beautifully judged contrast. The opening is led by blackcurrant leaf (green, sharp, with that sulphurous facet that recalls a stem crushed between the fingers) softened by bergamot. The heart brings a fresh, vivid rose made tangier by blackcurrant fruit. The ambergris and musk base is light, almost self-effacing, leaving the green and floral notes in front to the very end. It is naturalistic and a little wild, far from powdery or sugary roses: one of the house’s most recognisable scents, and one of its greenest.
