Our take
What does Insolence smell like?
Guerlain launched Insolence in 2006, in a bottle by Serge Mansau, with Hilary Swank as the face. Maurice Roucel signed it with Sylvaine Delacourte. The name fits. Violet opens loudly alongside raspberry and red berries, with a tartness that recalls old-fashioned pastilles. It returns in the heart, now surrounded by orange blossom and rose. The effect is fluorescent, close to shrill, and that's the point. The base calms things down a little. Iris adds a more grown-up powder and tonka rounds it off, with a resin that lasts for hours. This is the original eau de toilette. The 2008 eau de parfum is a different and darker composition. Insolence is still on sale, and its projection is still startling.
