Our take
What does Hugo Red smell like?
Hugo Boss launched Hugo Red in 2013 for its Hugo line, which aims younger and more urban than Boss. The eau de toilette opens on grapefruit and pink pepper. Galbanum adds a slightly bitter green streak. Then the heart smells of raw rhubarb and pineapple. Dry cedar and a few metallic notes give it a cold sheen. The base is basic and does its job. Tonka and amber soften everything without adding much weight. Compared with 1995's Hugo Man, with its green apple fougère, Hugo Red is fruitier and sweeter. The synthetic edge may bother some noses. In the first hour, though, the rhubarb has a juicy crunch that is genuinely pleasant. Longevity is weak and it stays close to the skin, so it suits easygoing days. Don't confuse it with Deep Red, the house's feminine scent.
