Our take
What does Boss Soul smell like?
Hugo Boss launched Boss Soul in 2005, an eau de toilette attributed to Ursula Wandel. It opens with a pile of cool spices. Cardamom and anise lead, with bergamot, mandarin and dry black pepper behind them. There's a whiff of gingerbread dough. The heart warms up. Cinnamon, mace and coriander circle a lavender that keeps an aromatic thread running. The base turns oriental. Tonka and vanilla soften over musks, with amber plus a vetiver that stops it getting too sweet. Boss Bottled is more apple and more wood. Soul runs warmer and spicier. It also hints at Viktor & Rolf's later Spicebomb, though gentler and far less loud. Current availability is patchy, and you often have to go through resellers. On skin the cinnamon outlasts everything else, and the anise is gone within the hour.
When to wear it
A winter evening scent. Two sprays on the chest, and the cinnamon spreads with body heat.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Spicy family. Boss Soul is one of 35 creations by Hugo Boss in our encyclopedia.
