Our take
What does Hugo Energise smell like?
Hugo Boss released Hugo Energise in 2005, following the 1995 Hugo for men and its green canteen bottle. The name says it all. This is a sporty fragrance aimed at a young crowd. The opening fizzes. Lemon, mandarin and kumquat give a sour zest, mint adds a chewing-gum chill and pink pepper prickles. Cardamom is already lurking behind them. The heart turns aromatic. Juniper and clary sage bring a gin-like smell while nutmeg and coriander warm things up. Jasmine and freesia stay in the background. The base is the real surprise. A soft leather settles over vanilla and dry teak. Next to the 1995 Hugo, which is much greener and leans on lavender, Energise comes across spicier and sweeter. It also loses its freshness faster, often within two hours of spraying.
When to wear it
Made for hot days, straight out of the shower or before the gym. Four sprays are not too many since the top fades fast.
It belongs to the Woody, Spicy family. Hugo Energise is one of 35 creations by Hugo Boss in our encyclopedia.
