Our take
What does Scherrer 2 smell like?
Jean-Louis Scherrer launched Scherrer 2 in 1986, right in the wave of big floral orientals. The perfumer is not reliably documented, so we leave that out. The opening is unusual. Pineapple brings very ripe tropical fruit, which star anise cuts through at once with a liqueur-like taste. Bergamot and mandarin lighten the picture a little. The heart is a rich white bouquet of tuberose, jasmine and iris bound together by honey that clings to the flowers. That honey is what makes it smell so 1980s. The base slides into heliotrope and its almond powder, with resinous benzoin, vanilla and sandalwood. It stays warm and enveloping for hours. Dior's Poison from a year earlier comes to mind, though Scherrer 2 is fruitier and less dark. The current formula is reported to be drier than the vintage bottles.
