Our take
What does Kokorico smell like?
The name mimics a rooster's crow, a very French wink from Jean Paul Gaultier. Kokorico came out in 2011 as an Eau de Toilette by Annick Ménardo and Olivier Cresp. It opens green and sweet. Fig leaf brings a sappy note with a milky hint of the fruit behind it. Cocoa arrives quickly and it is the part you remember. It is bitter and powdery, closer to dark cocoa powder than to dessert, so the scent never tips into gourmand. Patchouli and vetiver take over next, along with dry cedar. The base is where it falters. A very synthetic amber wood creeps in and hardens the finish. The first hours are the best ones. Longevity and projection are both strong. Kokorico by Night followed in 2012.
When to wear it
Autumn and winter, for evenings or weekends. Two sprays are plenty.
It belongs to the Woody family. Kokorico is one of 22 creations by Jean Paul Gaultier in our encyclopedia.
