Our take
What does Satine smell like?
Lalique launched Satine in 2013. Nathalie Lorson of Firmenich built it as a vanilla oriental inspired by the feel of satin, and the name sums it up. The opening is floral and fairly thick. Jasmine and gardenia arrive together while heliotrope adds its powdery almond and modelling-clay note. Tonka and vanilla soon take over. A touch of pink pepper keeps them from turning into pudding. This is where Satine finds its character: a smooth, almost cosmetic vanilla that clings to skin. The base heads into wood. Patchouli and vetiver bring some earth and shade, and sandalwood polishes the edges. Next to Guerlain's Shalimar, the benchmark for vanilla orientals, Satine is tamer and far less smoky. It aims for comfort rather than thrills. Lalique also sells it as a body cream and lotion, which suits a scent this soft.
When to wear it
Best in the evening and in cold weather, sprayed on a sweater or scarf where the vanilla lingers. Two sprays are plenty because the base is generous.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber family. Satine is one of 17 creations by Lalique in our encyclopedia.
