Our take
What does Ralph smell like?
In 2000 Ralph Lauren went after a younger crowd with Ralph, an eau de toilette in a turquoise bottle. The opening sets the tone. Osmanthus brings an apricot facet, mandarin and loquat add juice, and apple leaf freshens things up. It is cheerful and a little tart and very easy to read. Freesia and magnolia lead the heart. Boronia, an Australian flower with a fruity edge, joins them along with linden blossom that recalls an evening herbal tea. The base is just iris and white musk, enough to hold the scent on skin without weighing it down. Ralph is much less plush than Romance, released by the same house two years earlier. It belongs to the wave of sheer fruity florals around 2000, the kind you wore with jeans and sneakers without a second thought.
