Our take
What does 1932 smell like?
Chanel added 1932 to Les Exclusifs in early 2013, with Jacques Polge as the perfumer. The name refers to the year Gabrielle Chanel showed Bijoux de Diamants, her first fine jewelry collection, full of stars and comets. The scent opens with juicy pear and a faint grapefruit. Neither lasts long, and that's the point. The heart is a white jasmine accord, clean and bright, with nothing animalic about it. Iris gives it the powdery texture of face makeup. The base is very light. Dry vetiver and woody notes hold everything up without weighing it down. 1932 speaks softly. It stays close to the skin and lasted about four hours in its original eau de toilette form. Next to No. 19, the house's other iris, it smells far less green and far gentler. Think of it as a jeweler's jasmine, polished and smooth.
When to wear it
Ideal for the office or a daytime ceremony, when you want to smell good without bothering anyone. Spray generously, because it fades fast.
It belongs to the Floral, Powdery family. 1932 is one of 45 creations by Chanel in our encyclopedia.
