Our take
What does Coach Open Road smell like?
Coach released Open Road in 2022, a men’s eau de toilette composed by Jean-Christophe Hérault. The theme is a road trip along the American coasts with no fixed route. It opens with a juicy red apple and bright lemon. Sichuan pepper shows up almost at once. It doesn’t burn. It tingles with the zesty, almost electric bite typical of this berry. The heart calms down with clary sage and lavender, two dry herbs that give a sense of open air. Vetiver, cedar and patchouli make up the base. It is woody and clean, with a faint smokiness from the vetiver. Anyone who knows Dior Sauvage will recognise the Sichuan pepper and lavender pairing. Open Road is less ambery and less loud, though, and the fruit plays a bigger role. It breaks no new ground. It is well built and easy to wear.
