Our take
What does Le Parfum Royal smell like?
Elie Saab presented Le Parfum Royal in 2019, composed by Maïa Lernout. The brand calls it an ambery floral chypre. The name points to the Lebanese designer's ceremonial gowns, and the scent follows the same taste for pomp. It opens on bright mandarin, backed by what the house calls a radiant accord. The heart brings together two roses, Turkish and Bulgarian, lit by Lebanese neroli. Rose clearly leads and takes on a jammy tone. The base is the loudest part. Indonesian patchouli settles in with vanilla, sandalwood and amber, and the whole thing turns dark and earthy. Anyone sensitive to patchouli should test before buying. Le Parfum from 2011 was built on orange blossom and felt sunny and honeyed. Le Parfum Royal goes the other way, heavier and more nocturnal. It lasts well on skin, often beyond six hours.
