Our take
What does Encens Mythique d'Orient smell like?
Guerlain unveiled Encens Mythique d'Orient in 2012 as part of Les Déserts d'Orient, a trio aimed at Middle Eastern tastes. Thierry Wasser led the work. Despite the name it comes across as more Parisian than Arabian. The opening is aldehydic and almost prickly, quickly giving way to powdery rose and saffron with a honeyed edge. The heart darkens. Patchouli and vetiver tie the rose to something earthy. Then the incense rises, with moss and ambergris adding a salty, faintly animalic touch. After two hours what remains is an abstract woody rose. Far less austere than Comme des Garçons' Avignon, which smells of church stone, Encens Mythique d'Orient keeps a drawing-room warmth. It's the easiest of the three Déserts d'Orient to wear. It came in a 75 ml eau de parfum bottle at a premium price.
When to wear it
A winter evening scent, best sprayed on a coat so the incense lingers. Two sprays are enough.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Woody family. Encens Mythique d'Orient is one of 89 creations by Guerlain in our encyclopedia.
