Our take
What does Shalimar Souffle Intense smell like?
In 2017 Guerlain followed up Shalimar Souffle de Parfum, released in 2014. Thierry Wasser composed Shalimar Souffle Intense, an eau de parfum in a deep cobalt blue bottle. It opens green and fairly light, like a fresh stem. Then white flowers fill the heart. Jasmine sambac brings a slightly fruity note, and an orange blossom water accord adds the softness of Middle Eastern pastries. This is the best part. The base turns back toward Shalimar tradition. Wasser pairs two vanillas, from Tahiti and Madagascar, for a warmer and rounder result. Tolu balsam and benzoin add sweet resin while musk keeps the skin feeling clean. Compared with the 1925 Shalimar, the bitter bergamot, incense and leather are gone. You keep the vanilla but lose the smoke. Next to the first Souffle, which was sheerer, the Intense sits closer to the original. A good compromise if Shalimar itself feels intimidating.
When to wear it
A date or evening scent for spring and autumn. Two sprays on the nape will do, since the vanilla grows over time.
It belongs to the Floral, Oriental / Amber family. Shalimar Souffle Intense is one of 89 creations by Guerlain in our encyclopedia.
