Our take
What does Un Jardin sur le Toit smell like?
Hermès launched Un Jardin sur le Toit in 2011, the fourth chapter of Jean-Claude Ellena's garden series. The idea came from the garden on the roof of the house's headquarters on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Apple and pear trees grow there above the traffic. The opening is exactly that. Crisp apple and juicy pear sit on a green note of freshly mown grass. The heart brings flowers. Rose and magnolia stay light, with a hint of aromatic herbs. The base is very thin. Cedar and white musks hug the skin without a sound. Ellena works here with transparency and few materials. Compared with Un Jardin en Méditerranée from 2003, this one is fruitier and less woody. It does not last long, which is part of the style. The apple stays crisp for a good hour before it softens.
