Our take
What does Obsession for Men smell like?
Obsession for Men followed the women's version closely, in 1986. Calvin Klein gave the formula to Bob Slattery. Restraint was not on the menu in that decade, and this scent proves it. The top mixes citrus and lavender. Mandarin, lime and grapefruit flash for a moment. Cinnamon quickly takes over. In the heart, myrrh and nutmeg set up a warm church atmosphere. Rosewood and carnation add a spicy floral note, while sage and pine bring an aromatic line. The base is ambery and vanilla-rich, backed by sandalwood, musk and patchouli. Vetiver keeps a little dryness and stops the whole thing from turning syrupy. Compared with Yves Saint Laurent's Kouros, the other monster of that decade, Obsession for Men is less animalic and sweeter. It has aged, but it keeps an honest charm if you apply it lightly.
