Our take
What does Parfum Sacré smell like?
Caron launched Parfum Sacré in 1990. Jean-Pierre Béthouart composed it for a house long known for its orientals. The opening is peppery and sharp. Pepper, mace and cardamom blend with a streak of lemon, like freshly ground spice. Then the rose walks in and takes over. Jasmine and orange blossom support it without stealing the spotlight. The base is warm and a little animalic. Myrrh brings a resinous, almost churchy note that explains the name. Vanilla softens while civet and cedar keep some edge. It brings to mind mulled wine on a winter night. Compared with Yves Saint Laurent's Opium, Parfum Sacré is less massive and more focused on the rose. The formula was adjusted around 2011, and an Intense version followed. Rarely has a spicy rose felt this cozy. It reads as comfort rather than seduction.
When to wear it
For winter evenings, over a cashmere sweater. One spray is enough and it lasts until the next day.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Spicy family. Parfum Sacré is one of 5 creations by Caron in our encyclopedia.
