Our take
What does Boss Selection smell like?
Hugo Boss released Boss Selection in 2006 without naming a perfumer. It sits among the aromatic fougères and never got the spotlight that Boss Bottled enjoys. The opening sparkles. Pink pepper meets grapefruit and orange, with bergamot holding back. In the heart, star anise brings an unexpected licorice touch. Geranium and cedar needles make it greener and drier. It suggests a forest after rain more than a barbershop. The base stays clean with patchouli, vetiver and musk. Boss Bottled from 1998 is sweeter with its apple and cinnamon. Selection feels more restrained and grown up. The anise is the detail that makes it worth a sniff, and it lasts longer than the citrus. It may lack a hook, which explains why it stays in the background. It is not discontinued but has become hard to find in big chains.
When to wear it
An office scent that bothers nobody. Three or four sprays in the morning last the day.
It belongs to the Fougère, Aromatic family. Boss Selection is one of 35 creations by Hugo Boss in our encyclopedia.
