Our take
What does Histoire d'Orangers smell like?
Marie Salamagne created Histoire d'Orangers for L'Artisan Parfumeur in 2017. She drew on one specific memory: the sun setting over the walls of Taroudant, in Morocco's Souss valley. Neroli opens the show, green and see-through, like petals held up to the light. A white tea note keeps everything fresh. Orange blossom then takes on more colour. It turns yellow and honeyed as it warms on skin, without ever going indolic. Musk makes the base very soft. Ambroxan and tonka add a light velvet, like cashmere over tanned shoulders. Bois de Jasmin described it as orange blossom painted by Matisse, and the image fits. Compared with Guerlain's Néroli Outrenoir, it is less smoky and gentler. This is a daytime orange blossom with no shadows at all. It never reaches for drama, and that restraint is the whole point.
