Our take
What does Mûre et Musc smell like?
Mûre et Musc came out in 1978, a few years after Jean-François Laporte founded L’Artisan Parfumeur. The house says he finished the formula with perfumer friends in Grasse, Jean-Claude Ellena among them. It was the first scent to pair red fruit with white musk, an idea that has since become commonplace. The opening is more aromatic than you would expect. Basil and Amalfi lemon bring a shot of freshness, and mandarin and orange round it out. Then blackberry arrives with red berries, juicy and slightly tart, never syrupy. The base lays down a clean musk like laundry dried in the sun, with a hint of oakmoss for shade. Compared with Mûre et Musc Extrême, the denser and more cassis-heavy 1993 version, the original is lighter and brighter. It inspired many fruity perfumes and still holds its own.
