Our take
What does Mauboussin (femme) smell like?
The jeweller Mauboussin entered perfumery in 2000 with this first scent, housed in a pyramid-shaped bottle. Christine Nagel was the perfumer. The opening is frankly fruity. Golden plum dominates, joined by red mandarin, bergamot and a juicy mirabelle. The heart turns heady. Jasmine and Turkish rose mingle with ylang-ylang and white peach. The base tips everything toward amber with patchouli and benzoin. Vanilla, sandalwood and cedar complete it. Patchouli gives it the bearing of a fruity chypre, while vanilla pulls it toward the oriental side. Retailers don't even agree on its family. The result smells like warm plum jam on powdered skin. Next to Mugler's Angel, it is less sugary and more floral. It also feels more old-fashioned, which is part of the appeal for some. Sold cheaply today, it remains a bargain for lovers of candied fruit.
When to wear it
A winter evening scent, best applied with restraint. One or two sprays will do since the amber base projects strongly.
It belongs to the Chypre, Fruity family. Mauboussin (femme) is one of 4 creations by Mauboussin in our encyclopedia.
