Ranking

The best Tom Ford fragrances for men, ranked honestly

Our top Tom Ford for men is Oud Wood. It is a polished oud you can wear to the office without clearing the room. Tobacco Vanille comes second: denser, sweeter, and made for cold nights. Noir Extreme rounds out the podium as the only official men's scent on the list. The other five are sold as unisex. In practice, men wear them at least as much as women do.

How we ranked them

We looked at four things. Influence came first. Tobacco Vanille, Oud Wood and Tuscan Leather all launched in 2007 and defined the house style, then got copied everywhere. Next came composition, judged on how clearly the materials read. Versatility weighed heavily. A scent you wear all winter beats one you pull out three nights a year, which is why Oud Wood (intensity 3 out of 5, office-friendly) edges out Tobacco Vanille. Last came performance. Longevity is rarely an issue with Tom Ford, Neroli Portofino aside. Overdoing it is the real risk: Tuscan Leather, Tobacco Vanille and Tobacco Oud all score 5 out of 5, and one spray too many can ruin a dinner. We left out Lost Cherry, Bitter Peach and Soleil Blanc. They are mostly worn by women, and we wanted a list that makes sense for men.

Smoke, leather and saffron: the house signature

Line these eight bottles up and a room appears. Tobacco runs through Tobacco Vanille and Tobacco Oud. Leather runs through Tuscan Leather, Ombre Leather and Fucking Fabulous. A thread of saffron runs from Noir Extreme through Ombre Leather to Tuscan Leather. The bases repeat too: sandalwood, amber, vanilla or tonka turn up in nearly every one. This is a house that thinks in cold weather. Seven of our eight picks are rated for autumn and winter. The lone exception, Neroli Portofino, reads like a Mediterranean holiday from the rest. That consistency has a downside. The scents share a certain density, so a man who already owns two may want something dry or green from another brand. For a first Tom Ford, start from a register you already like: leather, tobacco or oud.

Which one for which occasion

For work, Oud Wood is the safe bet, with Ombre Leather as the backup if you prefer leather. For a winter dinner or a date, Tobacco Vanille and Noir Extreme compete for the spot. The first smells of blond tobacco and dried fruit, the second of spiced milk and rose. In summer, only Neroli Portofino works, and you will need to reapply by mid-afternoon. If you want something loud, go for Tuscan Leather or Tobacco Oud and keep them for properly cold nights. One tip applies across the range. Spray your chest or the lining of a jacket rather than your neck. The scent unfolds more slowly that way, and the people sitting next to you will appreciate it.

Our selection

8 perfumes, in order

  1. 1 Oud Wood Tom Ford

    Tom Ford · 2007 · Woody Oriental

    Oud Wood

Number one because it works almost anywhere. Cardamom and Sichuan pepper open onto a dry oud, softened with tonka and sandalwood, with nothing barnyard about it. This is the Tom Ford you can wear to the office in January. Longevity is only average, and fans of raw oud will call it tame. Next to Tobacco Oud it feels almost sheer, which is exactly the point.

  2. 2 Tobacco Vanille Tom Ford

    Tom Ford · 2007 · Oriental Spicy

    Tobacco Vanille

Honeyed tobacco, thick vanilla, dried fruit and suede. This is the scent most people picture when they hear the name. It is unisex on paper, but that puff of tobacco leaf speaks loudly to men. One spray is enough and two will fill a room. Sweeter than Noir Extreme and less smoky than Tobacco Oud, it only works in the cold. In mild weather it turns cloying.

  3. 3 Noir Extrême Tom Ford

    Tom Ford · 2015 · Oriental Woody

    Noir Extrême

The only official men's fragrance here. Saffron and mandarin give way quickly to kulfi, the milky Indian dessert, then to amber and sandalwood. We rank it third for its well-built warmth and solid staying power. If you like your masculines dry, you will find it too soft. It is still easier to wear than Tobacco Vanille on an autumn evening because it is less massive.

  4. 4 Tuscan Leather Tom Ford

    Tom Ford · 2007 · Leather

    Tuscan Leather

Raspberry, saffron and thyme over raw leather, composed by Harry Frémont in 2007. It is the most powerful leather in the lineup and smells unmistakably of a saddle shop. Use one spray on the chest, not the neck. It is wilder than Ombre Leather and far harder to live with. Save it for winter nights, and only if you are happy to be noticed.

  5. 5 Ombre Leather Tom Ford

    Tom Ford · 2018 · Leather

    Ombre Leather

If you want a leather for everyday wear, this is it. Sonia Constant set cardamom and jasmine on supple leather over moss and musk. It works for evenings and weekends in cool weather. Compared with Tuscan Leather it is smoother and less of a statement. Some people call that flat. We think it is the reason you end up reaching for it more often.

  6. 6 Neroli Portofino Tom Ford

    Tom Ford · 2011 · Citrus Aromatic

    Neroli Portofino

Our only summer pick. Rodrigo Flores-Roux built a luxury cologne of bergamot, lemon, neroli and orange blossom over musk and angelica. It goes from office to beach without effort. The catch is well known: citrus like this fades, so plan on a second spray after lunch. It is the polar opposite of Tobacco Oud and shows the lighter side of the house.

  7. 7 Tobacco Oud Tom Ford

    Tom Ford · 2013 · Woody Spicy

    Tobacco Oud

Whisky, cinnamon, tobacco and oud over castoreum make this the darkest scent on the list. Keep it for winter nights and special occasions, and go easy. It is smokier and woodier than Tobacco Vanille, and less sweet, which suits men who are tired of vanilla. For everyday wear it is simply too heavy. We will not pretend otherwise.

  8. 8 Fucking Fabulous Tom Ford

    Tom Ford · 2017 · Leather

    Fucking Fabulous

Behind the loud name sits a refined almond leather. Clary sage and lavender up top, then a heart of almond, iris and vanilla resting on cashmeran. Men who like powdery leathers will enjoy it: softer than Tuscan Leather, creamier than Ombre Leather. It lands eighth because the name puts off a lot of buyers, not because of anything in the bottle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Tom Ford cologne for men?

If you only buy one, make it Oud Wood. It works at the office and in the evening, and it never shouts. For a statement evening scent, Tobacco Vanille is the house benchmark. Noir Extreme is the pick if you want something officially marketed to men.

Can men wear Tom Ford's unisex fragrances?

Yes, and most of the range is unisex anyway. Oud Wood, Tobacco Vanille and Tuscan Leather are labelled unisex. Their materials are classic men's territory: tobacco, leather, oud and spice. Only a few fruity releases such as Lost Cherry lean clearly toward women.

Which Tom Ford is best for summer?

Neroli Portofino. It is a citrus and neroli cologne, light and clean, that works from the office to the beach. Almost everything else from the house is built for autumn and winter. In real heat, Tobacco Vanille or Tuscan Leather quickly become suffocating.

How many sprays of Tom Ford should I use?

One for the heavy hitters: Tobacco Vanille, Tuscan Leather and Tobacco Oud. Two for Oud Wood, Ombre Leather or Noir Extreme, which project less. Neroli Portofino can take three plus a top-up later in the day. Aim for your chest or clothes rather than your neck.
