Our take
What does Baby Doll smell like?
Yves Saint Laurent launched Baby Doll in 1999, a fruity eau de toilette aimed at a younger crowd than Opium or Paris. Perfumer credits vary from source to source, and so does the exact note list. The effect, on the other hand, is not in doubt. The opening is a fruit bowl of pineapple, apple and orange, sharpened by tart blackcurrant. The heart softens everything with a light rose, freesia and lily of the valley. Heliotrope then adds a powdery almond note. The base stays light. Soft vanilla and a touch of cedar or sandalwood settle the scent on skin without weighing it down. It is an end-of-century perfume, cheerful and unpretentious, in step with the fruity wave filling shelves at the time. The original eau de toilette is no longer made and now turns up only as old stock.
