What does Fruity Notes smell like?
Fruity notes smell of ripe fruit in general. Pear, peach, berry and apple blur together with none in charge. The effect is juicy and a bit sweet, often tart at the opening. In a floral they add cheer. In a leather or woody scent they soften the top and make the whole thing easier to like. They evaporate quickly and give way to the heart within the hour.
Origin and production
Few fruits can be extracted, citrus aside. So fruity notes are built with synthetic molecules. Esters bring pear and apple. Lactones give peach skin and apricot. Raspberry and blackcurrant materials fill out the picture. The label stays vague on purpose in marketing pyramids, often to keep the formula private.
How perfumers use it
A fruity note works as a hook. Parfums de Marly Godolphin puts it at the top of a dry leather to soften it. Paloma Picasso Minotaure used it in 1992 above an oriental fougère. Lanvin Rumeur and Givenchy Live Irrésistible pair it with pale flowers. Valentino Valentina makes it a sweet opening before tuberose. Paco Rabanne Black XS L’Excès for Him mixes it with ozonic notes.
How to wear it
Perfumes with fruity notes suit spring and summer days. Spray just before heading out. The fruity top is the most fleeting part.
