Our take
What does Loulou smell like?
Cacharel launched Loulou in 1987 as a nod to Louise Brooks, the actress with the black bob from the 1920s. The opening is a very 1980s mix of violet and anise with dark fruit. Plum and blackcurrant bring a jammy note, while anise adds a cool flash. The heart is a heady white bouquet. Tuberose and orange blossom lead, thickened by ylang-ylang, and iris dusts the whole thing with face powder. The base is the most comforting part. Benzoin and vanilla join tonka bean and musk in a powdery amber that smells of makeup. Loulou belongs to the big floral orientals of its era, alongside Poison and Opium, but it is softer and more childlike than either. Longevity is excellent.
