Our take
What does Poême smell like?
Lancôme launched Poême in 1995, composed by Jacques Cavallier. It is built around two flowers never used in perfumery before: the Himalayan blue poppy and datura. You cannot smell them in isolation, but the opening has a strange floral note, watery and narcotic. Narcissus adds its green, animalic side, while bergamot and mandarin bring some clarity. The heart is unusually dense. Mimosa, jasmine and tuberose stack up with orange blossom, freesia and ylang-ylang. Mimosa leads, powdery and honeyed like a branch cut in February. The base is just as generous. Vanilla, amber and tonka mix with musk and cedar in a warmth that lasts for hours. Poême belongs to the line of big floral orientals from the 1990s. A few retailers still stock it, though production has not been officially confirmed.
