Our take
What does Ocean di Gioia smell like?
In 2020 Giorgio Armani marked ten years of Acqua di Gioia with Ocean di Gioia, an eau de parfum that followed the previous year's Light di Gioia. The opening pairs sparkling pear with citrus and green notes. It's fresh and slightly sweet, like a sorbet. The heart is built on water jasmine, more watery than heady, with lily of the valley and rose alongside. A salty note runs through it all and gives that impression of skin fresh out of the sea. The base is discreet. Musk and sandalwood lay down a clean veil that's barely woody. This is far from the calone-heavy marines of the 1990s. Ocean di Gioia is more floral and more polite. Compared with Acqua di Gioia it's less minty and saltier. It lacks character, though, and fades faster than you'd hope from an eau de parfum.
