Our take
What does Escape smell like?
Calvin Klein launched Escape in 1991, after Obsession and Eternity. Claude Dir was the perfumer, and the scent won a FiFi Award the following year. It opens with blue chamomile, coriander, lychee and apple. Chamomile brings a slightly bitter herbal note while lychee adds juicy freshness. The heart is a bouquet of jasmine, rose and lily of the valley, rounded by peach. The whole thing floats in the watery, airy feel that would define the decade. The base mixes vanilla, sandalwood, vetiver and white musk. It is warmer than you might expect from an aquatic. Vanilla keeps it soft on the skin late in the day. Next to L'Eau d'Issey, released a year later, Escape is fruitier and more colorful. It feels a little dated now, though it captures its era well.
When to wear it
Wear it by day in warm weather. Two sprays are enough, since it projects more than you think.
It belongs to the Floral, Aquatic family. Escape is one of 24 creations by Calvin Klein in our encyclopedia.
