Our take
What does Ambre Éternel smell like?
Guerlain released Ambre Éternel in 2016 as part of Les Absolus d'Orient, a line built for the Middle East and a follow-up to Santal Royal. Thierry Wasser picked several blocks of ambergris himself, choosing them for their iodine, warm or animal smell. He blended them into a communelle and used the mix as a tincture. You notice it from the first spray. There's a salty, almost ashy note. Coriander, cardamom and cinnamon ring it. The heart softens things. Orange blossom and ylang-ylang bring plushness, and a peach-like fruity note slides underneath. The base mixes woods, leather and amber in a dense, powdery texture. It's far from Shalimar, where vanilla runs the show. Here ambergris keeps the final word and the sweetness stays dry. The main flaw is practical. Limited distribution makes it hard to find outside Gulf department stores and London.
