Our take
What does Dans la Peau smell like?
Dans la Peau belongs to Louis Vuitton's first perfume collection, launched in 2016. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, the house perfumer, wanted to capture the smell of the leather workshops. So he created a bespoke leather infusion. The opening is surprisingly gentle. Ripe apricot and watery notes round off the leather from the start. In the heart, narcissus and magnolia sit beside a Grasse jasmine reserved for the house. Narcissus adds an animal, slightly hay-like side that suits leather. The base stays on leather and musk, closer to a glove than a biker jacket. The first minutes divide people, and some smell raw saddlery. Compared with Chanel's Cuir de Russie, Dans la Peau is fruitier and less smoky. Launched as a women's scent, it is now worn by anyone. The very high price keeps it for the committed.
When to wear it
An evening leather for autumn or cool spring days. Two sprays on bare skin rather than clothes so the leather melts in.
It belongs to the Leather family. Dans la Peau is one of 13 creations by Louis Vuitton in our encyclopedia.
