Our take
What does Apogée smell like?
Apogée is one of the seven perfumes that launched Les Parfums Louis Vuitton in 2016. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud spent about four years on them in Grasse. Léa Seydoux fronted the campaign. The theme here is lily of the valley, a flower perfumers have to rebuild because it cannot be extracted. Mandarin and orange give it a bright start. The lily of the valley arrives quickly, green and cool, with jasmine and magnolia to add some body. A light rose runs alongside. The base stays clean. White musk leads, backed by a slightly smoky guaiac wood and creamy sandalwood. Diorissimo has been the benchmark for this flower since 1956. Apogée plays the same note with more light and less bitter green. It feels more modern and also less distinctive. The heavy glass bottle borrows the restraint of the house’s trunks. On skin, the lily of the valley lasts longer than you would expect.
