Our take
What does In Love Again smell like?
Jean-Claude Ellena composed In Love Again for Yves Saint Laurent in 1998, a few years before he moved to Hermès. His taste for transparency is already all over it. The opening is openly fruity: tart blackcurrant, mandarin and a juicy muscat grape that almost fizzes. Rose and peony follow, painted in watercolour rather than arranged as a bouquet. Blackberry resurfaces in the base over a clean musk that stretches out the fresh-fruit feeling. Nothing is heavy or sugary. The pyramid varies a lot between sources. Some list grapefruit, plum, raspberry or cedar. On skin the result is the same: light summery fruit and laundry drying outdoors. It seems hard to find today, though no discontinuation has been confirmed.
